Discoloration results from increased melanin production in skin cells. More than 60% of pigment spots are caused by sun rays. Pigment changes can be either innate or acquired.
Freckles, or small discolored spots , scattered mainly on the face, are hereditary. They appear in young people and intensify under exposure to sunlight. Acquired pigment changes, the so-called melasma, appear
mainly in women in the facial area. Hormonal imbalances (pregnancy, contraceptives, menopause), liver illnesses, and use of some cosmetics and medicine make it easier for the spots to appear. Discoloration may
appear as a result of acne changes as well.
Remember:
Sunlight is the main reason of discoloration – avoid sunbathing and use preparations with strong filters; only proper amount and
frequency of sun block applications will provide adequate protection.
When using skin whitening products, avoid exposing your skin to sunlight.
